Hebri: A unique initiative at the Government Primary School in Shivapura, Hebri, is drawing attention for encouraging students to learn farming while contributing to their mid-day meal programme.
Students of the school are growing vegetables in a kitchen garden on the campus, which are used in the meals served at the school.
Around 168 students from LKG to Class 7 study at the school. For them, the garden has become a place to gain practical knowledge about agriculture and environmental care.
The initiative is being carried out under the guidance of physical education teacher Ramananda Shetty. Members of the National Green Corps Jalabindu Eco Club, along with teachers and parents, have helped develop the garden where organic vegetables are grown.
The vegetables cultivated in the garden include Basale leaves, Chape Harive greens, okra, brinjal, cucumber, and three varieties of bottle gourd.
The produce from the garden is used in the mid-day meal prepared for students, providing them with fresh and healthy food while helping them understand the importance of agriculture from an early age.
