Dehradun: The grand Jhanda Mela, one of Uttarakhand’s most historic and spiritual fairs, began with great devotion at the Sri Guru Ram Rai Darbar Sahib in Dehradun on Sunday. At 4:12 pm, the 94-feet high flag was hoisted under the guidance of Darbar Sahib’s head Shri Mahant Devendra Das Maharaj, marking the official start of the celebrations.

This year, the Darshani Gilaf was offered by the family of Dehradun businessman Anil Kumar Goyal. On Tuesday, a grand city procession will be taken out under the leadership of Shri Mahant Devendra Das Maharaj, continuing the tradition of spreading Guru devotion across the city.

Devotees from Across India

Apart from Uttarakhand, thousands of devotees from Delhi, Chandigarh, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and Haryana arrived to witness the unforgettable moment. Long queues formed not only at the Darbar Sahib complex but also on rooftops of nearby shops and houses, as people sought darshan of the historic flag.

As the flag rose, the atmosphere echoed with chants of “Shri Guru Ram Rai Maharaj Ki Jai”, “Jo Bole So Nihal, Satshree Akal”, and “Sachhe Darbar Ki Jai.” Devotees danced to drum beats, tears of devotion filled many eyes, and the entire city resonated with spiritual energy.

Even when one of the ropes used to hoist the flag broke, volunteers quickly replaced it, ensuring the ceremony continued smoothly. After the flag hoisting, many devotees paid obeisance at the Darbar Sahib before returning to their hometowns.

Historical Significance of Jhanda Mela

The Jhanda Mela is celebrated annually to commemorate the arrival of Guru Ram Rai, the eldest son of Guru Har Rai, in Dehradun in the 17th century. Guru Ram Rai established the Darbar Sahib, which became a spiritual and cultural center for followers. The tradition of hoisting the tall flag, known as Jhandeji, symbolizes faith, unity, and devotion. Over centuries, the mela has grown into one of the largest religious gatherings in North India, attracting devotees from far and wide.
