New Delhi, March 10: As of March 5, 2026, a remarkable 25,02,217 rooftop solar systems have been set up under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, according to information presented in Parliament on Tuesday.
For the fiscal year 2026, the scheme has utilized funds totaling Rs 14,585.29 crore, a significant increase from Rs 7,822.92 crore in the previous fiscal year.
Minister of State for Power and New and Renewable Energy, Shripad Yesso Naik, informed the Rajya Sabha that the National Portal has received 63,26,125 applications, leading to the installation of 25,02,217 rooftop solar systems by the specified date.
Initiated in 2024, the PM Muft Bijli Yojana is designed to be demand-driven, allowing all residential consumers with a grid-connected electricity connection from local distribution companies to benefit from the scheme by applying through the National Portal.
The government anticipates that installing rooftop solar systems in one crore households could generate renewable electricity amounting to 1,000 billion units, which could lead to a reduction of 720 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions over the systems' 25-year lifespan.
As of the end of 2025, the leading states in implementing this initiative are Gujarat, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, and Rajasthan.
In response to another inquiry, the minister reported that the country has installed a total of 266.78 GW of electricity capacity from non-fossil fuel sources as of December 31, 2025.
This capacity includes 258.00 GW from Renewable Energy sources (comprising 135.81 GW from Solar Power, 54.51 GW from Wind Power, 11.61 GW from Bio Energy, 5.16 GW from Small Hydro Power, and 50.91 GW from Large Hydro Power) along with 8.78 GW from Nuclear Power, Naik stated.
The government is also advancing the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM), aiming to position India as a global leader in the production, utilization, and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives.
