Microsoft's new Copilot Cowork AI tool has an Anthropic connection

Microsoft has announced the integration of Anthropic's artificial intelligence (AI) technology into its Copilot service.

The move comes as part of a larger effort to meet the growing demand for autonomous agents in the tech industry.

The new tool, dubbed Copilot Cowork, is based on Anthropic's popular Claude Cowork offering and can handle complex tasks like app development, spreadsheet creation, and data organization with minimal human oversight.

Microsoft hopes its long-standing relationships with enterprise customers and its commitment to security and data controls, will attract businesses interested in AI agents but hesitant to deploy them without safeguards.

Jared Spataro, who leads Microsoft's AI-at-Work efforts, said, "We work only in a cloud environment and we work only on behalf of the user. So you know exactly what information it (Copilot Cowork) has access to."

The launch of Copilot Cowork comes weeks after Anthropic's new tools for Claude raised investor concerns about the potential threat posed by AI agents to traditional software companies.

This led to a sell-off in the sector, with Microsoft's own shares falling nearly 9% in February.

Despite these market reactions, Microsoft is pushing ahead with its plans for Copilot Cowork.

The Copilot Cowork tool is currently in testing and will be available to early-access users later this month, Microsoft has announced.

While the company hasn't revealed specific pricing details yet, it did say some usage would be included in its $30-per-user-per-month M365 Copilot offering for enterprises.

Additional usage beyond that would also be available for purchase separately.

Along with the Copilot Cowork tool, Microsoft is also making Anthropic's latest Claude Sonnet models available to M365 Copilot users.

This move comes as a departure from the service's previous reliance on OpenAI's GPT models alone.

The integration not only strengthens Microsoft's relationship with Anthropic but also expands its range of AI models, amid investor concerns over its heavy reliance on OpenAI for nearly 45% of its cloud business contract backlog.
