Dom Chinea reveals huge compromise he made with Cornwall move

Dom Chinea, a presenter and expert craftsman on The Repair Shop, has disclosed the one concession he had to make following his significant relocation to Cornwall.

Dom, his wife Maria, and their dog Wendy have traded the hustle and bustle of Kent for the untamed splendour of West Cornwall.

His new series, Dom Chinea's Cornish Workshop, chronicles this move, and in the first episode, which aired on Monday 9 March, he revealed a particular issue they've encountered thus far.

The couple have purchased a dilapidated stone farmhouse with an open-sided cow barn that Dom intends to convert into his ultimate dream workspace, his Cornish Workshop.

However, they've stumbled upon a 'real challenge' with their new property - the lanes around their home are 'so narrow and tight', leading to Dom scraping his van and some delivery drivers being unable to reach the house.

Dom stated: "One of the joys of having two acres is there's plenty of room for all my new ambitious projects inside the workshop and out. But as a newcomer to the region I've also discovered the real challenge can be accessing this lovely space.

"I've been here now for a couple of months and I've been driving around in my van. Cornish lanes are so narrow and so tight, especially around here.

"I'm so sick of being forced to drive into the bush and scraping the whole side of my van on some brambles and bushes. It brings me to tears almost every time. So I've made a purchase... I've bought myself an old Defender."

Speaking in a video segment, he said: "I'm a big fan of buying stuff off the internet but sometimes end up regretting not seeing things in the flesh first. So, fingers crossed, it's going to arrive in one piece."

Nevertheless, the courier also encountered difficulties navigating the narrow lanes, as Dom explained: "I'm expecting delivery today but I'm not the only one who's finding local transport a challenge."

He continued: "Buying a house and buying a workshop there's always a compromise and the little lane on the way in was the compromise or one of the compromises. It was a pain for me moving all my equipment in here and my machinery because it's so narrow the trucks can't get down. So I'm going to jump in the car go and find him!".

Dom subsequently borrowed Maria's vehicle to meet the courier, where he collected his new Defender and drove that home before returning for Maria's car.

Dom Chinea's Cornish Workshop airs on Mondays at 8pm available on U&Yesterday, the series is also available to watch on Channel 4 On Demand.
