Former Premier League footballer Jimmy Bullard squandered his opportunity to partner with Sir Andy Murray following a controversial beer bottle incident. The incident resulted in the cult hero being barred from returning to the venue for a pro-am tournament. Bullard, 47, hung up his boots at MK Dons in 2012 and has subsequently developed a passion for golf.
He's a regular contributor on the 'Golf Life' YouTube channel hosted by former Soccer AM colleague Peter 'Tubes' Dales and routinely shares his own exploits on the course. Nevertheless, the former Fulham, Wigan and Hull City player faced consequences after offending members at the exclusive Sunningdale Golf Club. This occurred when he chose to utilise an empty beer bottle as an improvised tee at the opening hole.
"I'm not allowed to go again. I had a few drinks and I got carried away," he has subsequently admitted. "I put a Peroni off the first tee and clipped a ball off it. It's obviously not the thing to do, so I apologise."
Bullard made the admission during a guest appearance on snooker legend Stephen Hendry's Cue Tips YouTube channel. He also seized the moment to lobby for his membership at the club to be restored.
"If there are any Sunningdale members watching, I do apologise," he said to Hendry, who has yet to have his own membership at the club withdrawn. "I really want to come back."
Two-time Wimbledon victor Murray, a keen golfer himself, has become a regular participant on the pro-am circuit. This includes the renowned Sunningdale foursomes competition, which is set to once again host an array of star talent in 2026.
This year's pro-am tournament got underway on Tuesday, with morning and afternoon sessions divided between the Old and New courses. The competition will continue until Friday when the semi-finals and final are expected to take place.
Premier League legend Gareth Bale will be vying against Murray for the title of top amateur. Murray is slated to team up with two-time European Tour champion Eddie Pepperell, whilst Bale will join forces with Matthew Wylie.
Bullard, however, will not participate in the competition, which has been held since 1934. Given this history and the club's refined atmosphere, it's hardly surprising that the retired professional's beer bottle antics resulted in his suspension.
Both Murray and Bale competed in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship pro-am back in October 2025. The former displayed moments of brilliance and surprised spectators with his course strategy, whilst Welsh icon Bale stands out with a 0.1 handicap.
