Test is almost 90% accurate at detecting Alzheimer's-related brain changes
The p-tau217 blood test is almost 90% accurate at detecting Alzheimer's-related brain changes, even better than some current tests and just as good as expensive brain scans.
Brain-derived-specific p-tau217 assays show minimal interference from reduced kidney function, whereas total p-tau217 assays can be confounded by impaired kidney function.
Using data from hundreds of adults, the study found elevated p-tau217 can be detected up to 25 years before symptoms appear.
Women older than 70 with certain genes or on hormone therapy faced the highest risks.
