IndiGo, the largest airline in the country operated by InterGlobe Aviation Limited, announced on Tuesday that its CEO, Peter Elbers, has stepped down. This decision follows a significant operational crisis the airline faced in December. Rahul Bhatia, the managing director, has taken over the airline's management on an interim basis. In his resignation letter addressed to Bhatia, Elbers stated, "As per our discussions, I am resigning from my position as CEO of IndiGo due to personal reasons, effective immediately. Please waive the notice period."
Elbers Reflects on His Tenure
Elbers expressed that serving as IndiGo's CEO since September 2022 has been an honor and a privilege. He mentioned the joy of being part of the IndiGo family and contributing to its remarkable growth story. Under his leadership, IndiGo surpassed $10 billion in revenue and expanded its fleet to over 440 aircraft, including a historic order for 500 Airbus A320 family planes.
Challenges Faced During His Tenure
Despite these achievements, Elbers' tenure was marred by a significant operational crisis in December 2025. This crisis arose from the airline's failure to implement new regulations aimed at preventing pilot fatigue. Between December 3 and 5, IndiGo canceled over 2,500 flights and delayed nearly 1,900, affecting more than 300,000 passengers. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) imposed a record fine of ₹22.20 crore on Elbers and issued him a show-cause notice. Although the initial demand for his resignation did not seem to impact him, the crisis severely damaged the airline's reputation for punctuality.
