Nikita Grover's Passion for Casting

Nikita Grover, a dynamic casting director, passionately states, “I am always fighting for my actors…” This sentiment reflects her exceptional talent for identifying new faces and her dedication to the craft. In filmmaking, casting is crucial, and with notable projects like Sudip Sharma’s Paatal Lok and Kohrra, along with the upcoming Pushpak Vimaan, she excels at discovering not just actors but the very essence of storytelling. For her, the thrill of finding an actor who has never been in front of a camera before is unparalleled.

Having acted herself, including a role as cop Manju Verma in Paatal Lok and appearances in two Punjabi films, she has a deep empathy for performers. She asserts, “If I have discovered you, I will get you the job.”

Currently, Grover is on the lookout for talent for an untitled Punjabi film directed by Amarjit Saron, featuring Ammy Virk and Roopi Gill. She expresses concern over the lack of diversity in casting within Pollywood, noting that audiences often see the same few faces in numerous films. She emphasizes, “Punjab is filled with talent that deserves recognition.” While casting for both seasons of Kohrra, she discovered many lesser-known actors, including Pradhuman Singh and Mandeep Kaur Ghai, who have made significant impacts in the industry. She fondly recalls the dedication of senior actor Parminder Pal Kaur, who traveled from Patiala to Chandigarh for an audition at the age of 73.

Working on Kohrra reignited Grover's connection to her Punjabi roots, stating, “It felt like Punjab was calling me. I truly felt at home here. The warmth of Punjab is contagious.”

Convincing Punjabi filmmakers to embrace new talent is a challenge, but she is determined to approach every director, just as she did while searching for talent in Nagaland for Paatal Lok. Her casting journey often leads her to unexpected places, from cobbler shops to restaurants, and her instinct for spotting talent is sharp, even in unconventional settings. Collaborating with visionary directors like Sudip allows her the freedom to select anyone who captures her interest, regardless of their background.

Grover adheres to the principle of avoiding cliché casting, a lesson learned from her mentor Abhishek Banerjee, a talented actor and casting director. While she enjoys acting, she finds it challenging to promote herself and acknowledges the need to connect with other casting professionals.

Regarding recognition for casting directors, she believes there is still a long way to go before they receive the credit they deserve. However, she remains undeterred by the fact that lead roles are often chosen by directors, remarking, “Who else but Jaideep Ahlawat could have played Hathiram in Paatal Lok?” She candidly admits to being excluded from several projects due to directors' preferences for safer choices.

To aspiring actors who may feel disheartened by rejection, Grover advises, “Make auditions a regular practice and don’t focus on the outcomes. Treat them as opportunities for growth rather than as failures.”

Have You Watched Kohrra 2?

If you haven't seen Kohrra 2 yet, Grover encourages, “Watch it for the strong, complex female characters. I take pride in having cast so many talented women.”
