After leading India to a historic third T20 World Cup title, head coach Gautam Gambhir expressed his ambition to focus on creating a cohesive team rather than individual superstars. Following the team's impressive 96-run victory against New Zealand in the final held at Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium, Gambhir shared his thoughts on the team's future direction.
'Creating a Cohesive Unit'
Gambhir emphasized that while the media often seeks to highlight individual superstars, his primary responsibility is to foster a united team. He stated, "I am not concerned with broadcasting metrics, social media popularity, or viewer ratings; my focus is solely on what each player contributes to the team and the nation."
He further elaborated, "This distinction is crucial and will always exist. The media may want to spotlight superstars, but my role as head coach is to cultivate a cohesive unit. I strive to treat all players equally, as each of the 15 individuals in the dressing room holds equal importance to me."
Gambhir continued, "I do not evaluate players based on their runs or social media following. My sole concern is their contributions to the team and the country. My goal is to build a cohesive unit, and I hope to achieve this by the end of my tenure."
Transitioning from Superstar Mentality
Since Gambhir took over as head coach, there has been a noticeable shift away from the previous superstar mentality. Key players such as Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravichandran Ashwin have retired from Test cricket following a challenging period in early 2025. Additionally, prominent players like Rohit, Virat (now focusing solely on ODIs), Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, current Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill, Hardik Pandya, and Abhishek Sharma have returned to Indian domestic cricket to maintain their fitness and form.
