Ballari: A student of the reputed Sanjay Gandhi Polytechnic College in Ballari allegedly died by suicide at his house late Tuesday night. Following the incident, students expressed strong anger against the college management on Wednesday and damaged furniture on the campus.
The deceased has been identified as Aravind (19), a resident of Guggarahatti.
According to sources, a minor argument had taken place among students in the college on Tuesday. In connection with the incident, the college Head of the Department (HOD) and a professor had called Aravind’s parents to the college.
It is alleged that the lecturers strongly scolded Aravind in the presence of his parents and warned him that students involved in fights would not be allowed to continue in the college. They reportedly told him that it would be his final warning.
Upset by the incident, Aravind allegedly hanged himself at his house on Tuesday night.
On Wednesday morning, the college organised a condolence meeting for Aravind. After the meeting ended, students raised slogans against the college management and protested on the campus.
During the protest, students broke the window glasses of the principal’s office. They alleged that the strict discipline and humiliation by the HOD and lecturers directly led to Aravind’s death.
Police officers and staff from Brucepet Police Station visited the spot and brought the situation under control. A case has been registered at the Brucepet police station.
Suicide is preventable. If you get any such thoughts, consult or seek expert help.
