Despite efforts from educational boards to maintain integrity, a significant cheating scandal involving the AI chatbot ChatGPT has emerged in the Maharashtra Board Exam 2026. Authorities have responded by suspending 81 teachers implicated in this cheating scheme, marking a notable first in the state.

Let's delve into the details of this incident, including how the exam paper was compromised and the methods used for cheating with ChatGPT. We will explore how this situation unfolded and the subsequent actions taken.

Details of the Cheating Scheme

The cheating incident pertains to the 10th and 12th board exams overseen by the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSE). This issue was uncovered at the Chausala examination center in Beed district, Maharashtra. A report from a local news channel revealed that the Flying Squad discovered the cheating during an investigation. It was reported that the exam paper was leaked via WhatsApp shortly after distribution, allowing students to access solutions through ChatGPT. Similar suspicious activities have been reported at various centers in Beed, as well as in Jalna, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, and Nashik divisions.

Collusion Among Teachers and Consequences

The investigation has unveiled the involvement of teachers in this cheating scandal. It was found that images of the exam papers were being shared via WhatsApp within minutes of the exam's commencement, with correct answers sourced from ChatGPT being relayed to students through letters or digital means. The inquiry revealed alarming details, indicating that staff from local educational institutions were orchestrating this operation. Evidence, including seized mobile phones, confirmed the distribution of exam papers and AI-generated answers. Consequently, a departmental inquiry has been initiated, leading to the suspension of 81 teachers.
