The Central Government has increased MBBS and PG medical seats for the 2025-26 session. It has also decided to open new medical colleges across the country.
Great news has come for millions of students in the country who dream of becoming doctors. The Central Government has taken a major decision to further strengthen medical education. The government has approved 11,682 new MBBS seats for the 2025-26 session. It has also approved the opening of 43 new medical colleges in various parts of the country. This decision will expand medical education opportunities and provide the country with more trained doctors in the future.
In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Health Anupriya Patel shared the latest data related to medical education. She stated that the government is continuously working to expand the scope of medical education to increase the number of doctors in the country.
The data provided by the Ministry was compiled by the National Medical Commission (NMC). This data includes information on available seats in government medical colleges, private medical colleges, AIIMS, and institutions of national importance.
Increase in MBBS and PG Seats
The government has significantly increased medical education seats for the new session. 11,682 MBBS seats have been approved for the 2025–26 academic year. 8,967 postgraduate (PG) medical seats have also been approved. These seats will be available in various medical colleges, AIIMS, and other institutions of national importance across the country. The government says this will increase admission opportunities for medical education and provide students with a better opportunity to study in their own country.
43 New Medical Colleges to Be Opened
In addition to increasing medical seats, the government has also decided to open 43 new medical colleges. The opening of these colleges will not only expand medical education opportunities but will also strengthen health services in many states. It's often seen that there's a shortage of doctors in smaller towns and remote areas. The opening of new medical colleges can improve hospitals and healthcare facilities in those areas.
Major Changes in the Last Ten Years
Data presented in the Rajya Sabha also shows that the medical education infrastructure in the country has expanded rapidly over the past ten years. Compared to the 2014 situation, the number of medical colleges and seats has more than doubled.
As of 2014, there were a total of 387 medical colleges in the country. At that time, there were 51,348 MBBS seats and 31,185 postgraduate (PG) medical seats available. Currently, there has been a significant expansion in the field of medical education. Currently, there are 818 medical colleges in the country, while the number of MBBS seats has increased to 128,976, and PG medical seats have also increased to 85,020.
