LPG Crisis in Indian Railways: Is food in trains going to be stopped due to LPG crisis? The pressure on IRCTC catering system has increased due to gas supply being affected due to West Asia conflict. Railways is now considering emergency plans, ready-to-eat food and refund options.

IRCTC Food Service Crisis: LPG shortage across the country is now affecting IRCTC's catering operations. Railway officials say that if the situation does not improve, cooked food in trains may be temporarily stopped. Refunds are also being considered for passengers who have already booked meals with their tickets.

Why is LPG crisis affecting IRCTC base kitchen?

The food prepared in the base kitchen of IRCTC is loaded into the pantry car. Pantry cars do not have LPG cylinders, but gas shortage in the base kitchen hampers preparation of food for long distance trains. Railways has directed food plazas, refreshment rooms and Jan Aahar outlets at all stations to use alternative methods of cooking in case of any LPG shortage.

Impact of West Asia conflict on India

Railway officials said that due to the recent international conflict in West Asia, the supply of commercial LPG is being affected. IRCTC asked caterers to keep adequate stock of Ready-to-Eat (RTE) food so that passengers do not face any problem.

How many passengers may be affected daily?

IRCTC serves approximately 17 lakh meals daily across the country through its base kitchens and onboard catering. If there is disruption in the base kitchen due to the LPG crisis, it can directly affect the passengers of long distance trains.

Will passengers get refund?

Railway officials clarified that if there is any disruption in serving food in trains, refunds will be considered for those passengers who have already booked food. Along with this, the catering units will have to immediately inform the authorities, so that no passenger is deprived of food service.

Railway's emergency strategy

  • IRCTC has directed all catering license holders to:
  • Maintain continuous service at Food Plaza, Refreshment Room and Jan Aahar
  • Adopt alternative cooking options in case of any gas shortage
  • Keep Adequate Stock of Ready-to-Eat Food
  • Protect passengers from any kind of obstruction

Government's gas rationing scheme

The government has implemented rationing of natural gas. Houses with piped gas and CNG vehicles are on priority. The main reason for the LPG shortage is the blockage in shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, caused by the West Asia conflict.

What should IRCTC passengers do now?

As travelers prepare for their travel, please note that food service may be temporarily affected. It is best if they bring their own snacks or ready-to-eat options. IRCTC's emergency preparedness is to provide complete relief to the passengers, but vigilance is necessary during peak times.
