The Iran-America war has created a crisis of LPG cylinders in the country, which is deepening. People are standing with empty cylinders. There are long lines outside gas agencies. Pictures and videos are going viral on social media. The history of LPG in India is about 7 decades old. It started in India with the discovery of oil and gas.
Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) was established in 1956. After this, the process of processing oil and gas extracted from Bombay High (near Mumbai coast), Digboi and Krishna Godavari basin of Assam started. LPG is not found like oil. LPG is mainly a mixture of two gases: Propane and Butane. It is made in two ways, by refining crude oil and processing natural gas.
Where is the treasure of oil in India?
In India, currently crude oil is extracted from Assam, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Mumbai and Krishna-Godavari Basin. Not only this, along with its reserves, India has also created a large reserve of refined crude oil. This store is in Visakhapatnam, Mangalore and Pudur. Oil reserves are also being created in Odisha and Rajasthan.
- Digboi (Assam): This is the oldest oil field in India. LPG was also made here during oil refining.
- Naharkatiya (Assam): Large reserves of oil and gas were found in 1953. This increased the production of LPG.
- Ankleshwar (Gujarat): There is a large oil field discovered in the 1960s and LPG production started from here also.

Gas cylinder prices have been increased.
How did LPG bring revolution in the kitchen?
According to the official website of Bharat Petroleum, in 1955 this company was known as Burma Shell. Then this company started LPG for the first time. LPG was launched under the brand name 'Burshane'. The use of LPG provided a fuel to the kitchen that had neither smoke nor the hassle of using it.
This journey moved forward and Indian Oil played a big role in making it reach the people on a large scale. Indian Oil started the Indane brand in 1964. 22 October 1965, this date was written in golden letters in the history of India, on this day the first Indane LPG connection was released in Kolkata. The journey that started with around 2,000 consumers in 1965 has become a super brand today. It has registered its presence in the country with 18 crore connections.
Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, started in 2016, provided LPG connections to crores of poor families, which increased the use of clean fuel in villages also. In this way, with the development of oil industry, LPG came to India and brought revolution.

The use of LPG started gradually in India. Earlier, there was a trend of cooking with wood, coal and kerosene.A lot of smoke came out from the stove which caused respiratory and eye diseases to women and children. LPG became clean fuel. Earlier wood had to be collected and lighting the stove took time. LPG stove made it easy to cook food in less time. Women's life became easier. The utensils and walls would turn black from the stove. LPG does not produce soot, hence the kitchen remains clean. This reduced air pollution due to less smoke. Its reach from cities to villages created history.
