Suryakumar Yadav, the captain of India's T20I team, has expressed his ambition to secure an Olympic gold medal after the team achieved a remarkable feat by winning three consecutive International Cricket Council (ICC) white-ball championships since 2024.
On Sunday, India triumphed over New Zealand by 96 runs, successfully defending their T20 World Cup title. This victory marked a historic moment as India became the first nation to win the T20 World Cup on home soil, the first to clinch consecutive titles following their 2024 win, and the first to lift the trophy three times (2007, 2024, and 2026).
Reflecting on Recent Success
In a reflection on the team's accomplishments, Suryakumar noted that India's long wait for an ICC trophy concluded in 2024 with their victory at the ICC Men's T20 World Cup. This win initiated a successful streak for the Indian team, which was followed by another title at the ICC Champions Trophy and, most recently, the T20 World Cup victory in Ahmedabad. He stated, "In 2024, our ICC trophy drought ended after we won the T20 World Cup. Following that, we secured the Champions Trophy and now the T20 World Cup here in Ahmedabad. We have achieved three back-to-back ICC trophies. There is no looking back now. Whatever ICC event comes next, we will continue to play as we have since 2024. The ODI World Cup is set for 2027," Suryakumar shared on JioHotstar.
Future Aspirations: Olympic Gold and T20 World Cup
Suryakumar highlighted that cricket's inclusion in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics presents a significant goal for the Indian team to win an Olympic gold medal. He also mentioned that another T20 World Cup will occur that same year, emphasizing that while the team has already won the title twice in a row (2024, 2026), they aim to achieve a third consecutive victory. He remarked, "For this T20 team, relaxation is not an option. We cannot afford to relax at all. In 2028, there is a larger event on the horizon. The LA Olympics will feature cricket for the first time. That Olympic gold will undoubtedly be our top priority. Additionally, the T20 World Cup will take place again that year. Winning the trophy three times in a row is our next objective," the Indian captain added.
Suryakumar's Performance in the Tournament
During the T20 World Cup, Suryakumar was the third-highest run-scorer for India, accumulating 242 runs across nine matches with an average of 30.25. He also achieved one half-century during the tournament.
