NCERT: The new English textbook for Class 9, released by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), includes works by several Indian authors. These include works by Tamil poet Subramania Bharati, author and Rajya Sabha MP Sudha Murthy, Naga writer Temsula Ao, renowned poet Rabindranath Tagore, and Assamese novelist Mitra Phukan.
Previously, 15 of the 29 works in the textbooks taught in schools from 2006-07 to 2025-26 were by foreign authors. However, the new textbook gives greater importance to works by Indian authors, so that students can become more familiar with their country's literature.
Class 9 syllabus changed with the new English book "Kaveri"
According to officials, the number of textbooks for this subject has been reduced from two to one, and the number of works from 29 to 16, with an approximately equal number of works by Indian and international authors.
The new English textbook for Class 9, titled "Kaveri," begins with a story adapted from Rajya Sabha MP and author Sudha Murthy's 2004 book, "How I Taught My Grandmother to Read and Other Stories."
This book, prepared in accordance with the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) 2023, will replace the earlier textbooks "Beehive" and "Moments."
The new textbook includes works by Indian and foreign authors
This new Class 9 textbook covers "Elements of Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS)". It contains 16 texts—eight by Indian authors, including Subramanian Bharati, Sudha Murthy, Temsula Ao, Mitra Phukan, and Rabindranath Tagore, and six by foreign authors, such as David Roth, Charles Swain, Bryna T. Perkins, Robert Langley, Maya Anthony, and Irene Chua.
Six texts are written by foreign authors, including American poet David Roth, English poet Charles Swain, American children's author Bryna T. Perkins, poet Robert Langley, author Maya Anthony, and Singapore-based author Irene Chua.
The book also includes an anonymous poem titled "Gifts of Grace: Honoring Our Vocations." Additionally, a work titled "The World of Limitless Possibilities" features an interview with renowned Paralympic athlete Deepa Malik, which explores her life and achievements.
