Friends, in recent years the rising prices of petrol and diesel have seen people switching to EVs (Electric Vehicles), more and more people are choosing electric vehicles as a cleaner and more affordable option. Unlike traditional vehicles, EVs do not require petrol or diesel; Instead, they run on electricity and require regular charging.
Many new EV buyers often wonder whether it is cheaper to charge their vehicle at home or at a public charging station. Let us know the complete details
1. Cost of charging EV at home
Charging an EV at home is generally considered the easiest option. Cost mainly depends on two things:
Charger power capacity
The per unit electricity rate decided by your local electricity department.
For example, if you use a 7.2 kW home charger, it can consume about 7–8 units of electricity in an hour. If electricity costs around ₹5 per unit, one hour of charging could cost around ₹40 to ₹50. This makes charging at home much cheaper for daily use.
2. Charging cost at public charging station
Public charging stations usually offer DC fast chargers, which are more powerful than home chargers. These chargers can deliver up to 50 kW of power, allowing EVs to charge very quickly.
A 50 kW DC fast charger can use about 40–50 units of electricity in an hour. Apart from electricity charges, users also have to pay service charge, GST and other fees at these stations.
Due to these extra costs, charging an EV for an hour at a public fast-charging station can cost around ₹600 to ₹800. however
3. Important things to know
Most modern EVs and electric SUVs now support fast charging technology.
DC fast charging stations charge vehicles faster but are more expensive.
AC home chargers are slow but quite cheap for regular charging.
