China AI Ban: China's dangerous AI agent OpenClaw has been banned in government offices and banks, find out the reason..

OpenClaw isn't a simple AI tool like ChatGPT and Gemini. It's an agentic AI. This means it doesn't just answer your questions, but can also access your computer and operate on its own.

What can this AI do?

Read your emails and send automatic replies.

Access and modify your files.

Carry out external tasks via the internet (such as booking tickets or checking in at hotels).

This access is a cause for concern for cyber experts. If this AI falls into the wrong hands, it could spread viruses or leak sensitive national information.

Where has it been banned?
According to media reports, the Chinese government has taken a very strict stance regarding it:
Government institutions and banks: Orders have been issued to immediately remove it from the systems of all government offices, state-owned companies, and major banks.

Monitoring personal devices: If an employee's phone is connected to the company's network, its use is prohibited there as well.

Military alert: Families associated with the Chinese Army (PLA) have been specifically advised to stay away from this tool.

Reporting mandatory: In addition to deleting systems where it is already present, it has been made mandatory to inform senior officials.

What is China afraid of?
In China, data is considered a part of national security. The government fears that open-source tools like OpenClaw operate unchecked. Because it demands access to users' private data, its presence in sectors like banking and the military is seen as a major cyber risk. Following news of the ban, shares of major Chinese tech companies that were using this tool have seen a surge. This tool had become viral in China due to trends like lobster raising, but government crackdowns have now put the brakes on its popularity.
