The woman, whose identity was not disclosed, gave birth to a baby girl via C-section on March 4 at a hospital in Jilin Province, about two weeks before her due date, local outlet Sanxiang Metropolis News reported.

Both the mother and the newborn, who weighs 2.8 kg, are in good health.

The woman previously drew widespread attention on Chinese social media for conceiving through IVF at an advanced age after the death of her son in Feb. 2025.

Her son died of an undisclosed cancer at the age of 35, according to the South China Morning Post. “After my son’s death, my husband and I found ourselves at a loss for words. There was a heavy atmosphere in our home,” the woman said.

“Since I became pregnant, we experience joy every day. Without this baby, we wouldn’t have had the strength to carry on,” she added.

The couple receives a combined monthly pension of 10,000 yuan (US$1,400) and also earns some income from a small business.

According to the woman, longevity runs in her family as both of her parents lived past the age of 90. Doctors said her health condition is better than that of many younger people.

“There’s no reason to believe I will not live to 80 years old. Additionally, my nephew has promised to care for my baby after my husband and I are gone.

“I feel reassured knowing my baby will have someone to rely on, whether we’re here or not,” she said.

The woman has been breastfeeding her newborn since birth. She said she was moved to tears when she first saw the baby.

“I was so overjoyed. Finally, I met my baby. I feel like my son has returned,” she said.

Her story sparked debate on social media.

“Salute to this brave sister! The baby gives her motivation to live,” one internet user said.

“She is being selfish. When the baby reaches adulthood, her parents will already be in their 80s. The child will be burdened with caring for elderly parents at such a young age,” another wrote.
