LPG Cylinder Booking Rule: Global instability continues due to the Iran war and tensions in West Asia. There are reports of LPG shortages in many parts of the country. Changes have been made to the gas cylinder booking system, including the provision of a second cylinder after the first, after 25 days. Many misconceptions have arisen regarding gas booking and the gas situation. The government has clarified several misconceptions regarding LPG and stated that LPG will be available within 2.5 days of booking.
Lubricating gas will be available within 2.5 days of booking.
A senior official from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas stated that despite global uncertainties caused by the Iran war, India's crude oil and gas supplies remain secure, and there is no need for panic buying of fuel or cooking gas. Joint Secretary Sujata Sharma stated that LPG consumers will receive their cylinders within approximately two and a half days of booking, maintaining a stable supply chain.
In fact, on March 7, LPG prices were increased by ₹60 across all cities. A 14.2-kilogram domestic cylinder in Delhi now costs ₹913, while a 19-kilogram commercial cylinder costs approximately ₹1,883 after a hike of over ₹110. Authorities have prioritized domestic gas supply for households, forcing restaurants in cities like Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Gurugram to modify their operations. Many restaurants have revised menus, reduced gas consumption, and adopted alternative cooking methods, including coal-fired tandoors, induction cookers, and electric ovens.
What did the central government say?
Amid growing concerns about LPG across the country, the government has assured residents that there is sufficient supply to meet domestic needs. The government has urged people to ignore rumors. The government says India has diversified its energy supply and now imports approximately 70% of its oil through the non-Hormuz route, reducing the risk of any significant supply disruptions. According to the government, domestic LPG production has also been increased by approximately 20% in recent days.
