Whatsapp Parent-Managed Accounts: social media platform WhatsApp has launched a new feature keeping in mind the online safety of children. The company has announced the launch of Parent-Managed Accounts for users under 13 years of age.
Through this new feature, parents or guardians will be able to keep complete control over their children’s WhatsApp account. This means that now it will be in the hands of the parents to decide who can message their child and which groups he can join. According to the company, the purpose of this step is to provide a safe digital environment to underage users.
Parents will have complete control
WhatsApp said in a blog post that this new feature will limit children’s WhatsApp use. Once a parent-managed account is created, parents will be able to control who can contact their child. They will also be able to decide which groups their child can be added to. Additionally, if a message request comes from an unknown number, parents will be able to see it first and block it if necessary. Parents will also be able to control the privacy settings of the account.
Children will not be able to change privacy settings
The special thing about this feature is that users below 13 years of age will not be able to change their privacy settings themselves. To further strengthen security, WhatsApp has also ensured that a PIN is required to access these settings. No changes can be made without this permission.
This feature will gradually reach all users
WhatsApp said that parent-managed accounts will be gradually rolled out to all users. To create this account, the child must be under 13 years of age, while the parent or guardian must be over 18 years of age. This feature will be available on the latest version of WhatsApp for iPhone and Android.
New feature came amidst strictness of governments
There are increasing concerns around the world about children’s social media addiction and online safety. Therefore, many governments are tightening rules on the use of social media. In India, the Karnataka government recently announced a social media ban for children under 16 in its budget. Andhra Pradesh has proposed a social media ban for children under 13 years of age.
The central government is also considering gradually implementing rules on social media access for children. Meanwhile, this new feature in Meta can help parents keep an eye on their kids’ digital activities.
