Bengaluru: The Government of Karnataka has ordered the premature release of 31 life convicts lodged in various central prisons across the state on the basis of good conduct, following recommendations of the LCR Committee and approval from the Governor under Article 161 of the Constitution.
According to a government order issued by the Home Department on Wednesday, March 11, the Life Convict Review Committee examined 54 cases from different central prisons in the state before making its recommendations.
The decision was taken after reviewing the conduct, eligibility and other prescribed criteria of the prisoners.
The order stated that the governor has accorded approval for the premature release of 31 life convicts on the basis of good conduct under Article 161 of the Constitution.
The LCR Committee, chaired by the Additional Chief Secretary of the Home Department, reviewed the cases at its meeting held on November 19, 2025, after receiving proposals from the Directorate of Prisons and Correctional Services.
The recommendations were subsequently processed by the state government before being placed before the governor for approval.
Officials said the remission was granted in accordance with existing government orders and guidelines governing premature release of life convicts, aimed at facilitating rehabilitation of eligible prisoners on the basis of good conduct.
