Javelin thrower Sumit Antil, who has won the gold medal twice in the Paralympic Games, has once again done wonders. Sumit has also won the gold medal in the World Para Athletics Grand Prix. He threw 69.25 meters. In this competition being held in New Delhi on Thursday (12 March), all eyes were on the Javelin Throw event (F43/F44/F64). Sumit led the Indian challenge by securing first place in the F64 category. Pushpendra Singh won silver with a throw of 56.91m, while Poonam Ram won the bronze with an effort of 49.48m.

Such a throw was not expected – Sumit Antil

27 year old Sumit, resident of Sonipat, Haryana, has also won gold in the World Para Athletics Championship thrice. After winning gold in the World Para Athletics Grand Prix, he told that he had expected a throw of short distance. Sumit said, ‘This time there are many tournaments. I will try to perform well in the upcoming competitions. This is the off-season preparation phase for me. I did not expect such a throw. I was expecting around 67-68m but today’s throw was 69.25m, which was very good. So I am happy and my team is also happy.

Sumit further said, ‘I am not changing my technique, because we know that we are moving in the right direction in our training. Right now we just need circumstances where the throws fall in exactly the right place. That’s why I am participating in the tournament so that I can get those conditions somewhere.

Sumit Antil said that now his eyes are on the Asian Para Games to be held in Japan later this year, where his target is to cross the 75 meter mark. Sumit said, ‘I am making Asian Games my target and my target is 75 meters. I haven’t achieved this in practice yet. Even no athlete has crossed this figure but I am working on whatever improvements I can in my technique and strength to reach that target.
