On Thursday morning, a tragic shooting unfolded at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, during what seemed to be an ordinary class day. A gunman entered Constant Hall and inquired if the class was an ROTC session. Upon receiving confirmation, he opened fire, targeting the instructor multiple times. The instructor, a retired military officer, was rushed to the hospital but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries. The situation escalated until an ROTC student intervened heroically. Instead of fleeing, the student confronted the shooter and fatally stabbed him, preventing further casualties. Law enforcement officials noted that this brave act likely averted a more devastating outcome.
Shooter's Background Shooter Was An Ex-National Guard Soldier
The assailant has been identified as Mohamed Bailor Jalloh, a 36-year-old former member of the Virginia National Guard, who had a prior federal terrorism conviction. In 2017, he was sentenced to 11 years in federal prison, followed by five years of supervised release, after being found guilty of attempting to provide material support to ISIS and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, as reported by the US Department of Justice. At the time of his offense, Jalloh was serving in the Virginia National Guard, having previously been part of the American military framework before attempting to aid one of its most formidable adversaries. He was released from prison in December 2024, just three months prior to the shooting incident.
