Manipal: The discharge of sewage water from surrounding apartments into Mannapalla Lake has further contaminated the water body, leaving the entire environment foul-smelling. This has caused significant distress to the public and locals visiting the Mannapalla area, while also posing a threat to the water source.
Locals allege that drainage and household waste from more than six apartments surrounding the lake are flowing directly into the water without proper treatment. As a result, the lake water has already turned black. While some apartments have Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs), they are reportedly not functioning effectively. In several places, sewage water enters the lake through rainwater drains. This is degrading the lake's ecosystem, and the problem is likely to intensify during the monsoon.
Health risk
Mannapalla Lake is a major reservoir for Manipal and surrounding areas and was once a source of pure water. However, due to rapid urbanization over the last few years, building construction around the lake has increased. Consequently, the issue of sewage entering the lake is worsening daily. Besides environmental damage, this poses a serious risk to public health.
Identification required
The deteriorating state of Mannapalla, a landmark of Manipal, is negatively impacting tourism. The local administration must immediately conduct an operation to identify which apartments are discharging water into the lake. Locals warn that if notices are not issued and strict action is not taken against erring building owners, Mannapalla Lake will undoubtedly turn into a cesspool in the coming days.
Pumping into drains
Some apartment residents are reportedly using pumps to discharge sewage into rainwater drains. This sewage problem has spread as far as the local 80 Badagabettu Panchayat, causing local issues. Similarly, sewage passing through the Manipal police quarters is also flowing toward the lake.
Fear of diseases
With the increase in mosquitoes around the lake, the fear of dengue and other infectious diseases has risen. The public has urged the local administration to take immediate steps to prevent sewage from entering the lake. Locals demand an inspection of whether the STPs installed in apartments are working correctly and that necessary action be taken.
Legal action
"The issue of sewage water being released into Mannapalla Lake has already come to our notice. Warnings have already been issued to those concerned. If this continues, appropriate legal action will be taken." - Mahantesh Nagaragi, Commissioner, City Municipality
