For countless Britons, ketchup remains an indispensable condiment, perfect for accompanying chips, fish fingers, scrambled eggs and many other foods. Common wisdom suggests pricier products typically deliver superior quality. But does this hold true for ketchup?
One food blogger sampled three different varieties to determine which reigned supreme, and the results proved genuinely surprising. Becca, who boasts more than 589,000 followers on TikTok under the handle beccaeatseverything, tested three products priced between 73p and £7.95, reports the Mirror. Beginning her video, she said: "I bought the cheapest, most expensive, and a mid-priced tomato ketchup, so let's try them all and see which one tastes the best."
She commenced with Sainsbury's budget Stamford St Co option, which cost just 73p. Dispensing a small amount onto a spoon, Becca said: "That's a good consistency."
Following her taste test, she said: "That's really good. It has great tomato flavour, it's thick. I can actually taste good-quality tomato puree. There's nice spices coming through, and clove. There's not even that much sharpness to it. I was expecting it to be really watered down and sharp for the price.
"I'm really impressed. This is probably one of the nicest ketchups I've tried. It's got so much flavour to it. The thing that lets it down is, it is quite sweet, but I'd still be really happy with that. I think that's brilliant. I'm going to give that an 8.5 out of 10."
She proceeded to the second product, manufactured by Hellmann's, priced at £2.50. "It's a little bit more liquidy than the cheap one," she said. "It's got a nice balance. It is a bit thin.
"It's actually stronger on, like, vinegar than it is the actual tomato flavour. Do you know what? I think I'd actually prefer to have the Sainsbury's Stamford Street Co one. I would give that a seven out of 10."
Becca subsequently tested the premium option, from Fortnum and Mason, presented in a fancy glass bottle retailing at £7.95. "It's really hit and miss with very expensive products as to whether they are actually worth the price," she said. "A lot of the time they use organic or more natural ingredients [and] they taste like c***."
Upon sampling a spoonful, Becca reacted with surprise to the flavour. "It tastes like chocolate," she said. "It's got chili in it, it's spicy. It tastes like tomato chocolate, how have they even done that? There's no cocoa powder in this."
She continued: "I do like the tomato flavour that's coming through, but this is such a bizarre product. I'm going to give that a four out of 10."
Announcing her verdict, Becca declared: "Never would I have guessed it at the beginning of this haul that the cheap one would have won. I would have put my money on Hellmann's 100 per cent. But my winner this time is Sainsbury's Stamford Street Co, 73p, with an 8.5 out of 10."
Viewers shared their perspectives in the comments section. One remarked: "I love the M&S £1 one, it's like a purée texture which I'm not mad at." Another concurred, stating: "M&S is elite. Tastes far more expensive and is only a pound... I'll try the Sainsbury's one next time."
Someone else commented: "Daddy's ketchup is the best." And another user posted: "Does anyone else really like those cheap takeaway ketchups?"
A separate user noted: "I always loved the ketchup from the burger vans. That on chips while walking around the Sunday market or a fairground was elite. Probably cheap, but it just made the chips so yummy."
