Residents in Farnam, Nebraska, are being urged to evacuate as a wildfire poses a significant threat to their homes. Local officials have issued an emergency alert instructing residents to leave immediately and head east towards Eustis for safety. The Dawson County Emergency Management team communicated, "Citizens in Farnam should evacuate immediately and drive east to Eustis and seek shelter. Frontier County officials will assist upon arrival," as reported by the National Weather Service (NWS).
The wildfire, which is currently active in southwestern Dawson County, is anticipated to shift southward later in the evening due to changing wind patterns, potentially endangering the town. Emergency responders are actively combating a brush fire that ignited south of Maxwell earlier in the day, leading to road closures and evacuation orders in surrounding areas.
Evacuation orders have been issued for Farnam village, the Jeffrey Lake vicinity, and homes located two to three miles south of Gothenburg, as well as areas south of Tri City and east of Highway 47. Highway 47 has been closed in both directions between the Gothenburg interchange and Highway 23, with authorities urging the public to steer clear of the area to facilitate emergency operations. Additional road closures include Highway 23 between U.S. 83 near Maywood and U.S. 283 towards Elwood.
To accommodate displaced residents, shelters have been established at the North Platte Recreation Center and Brady Public Schools. Due to the fires' impact on staff and families, schools in Brady will remain closed on Friday.
In Lincoln County, fire crews are also engaged in battling flames along Cottonwood Road and South Government Pocket Road. The containment efforts are being hampered by strong winds, with sustained speeds around 31 mph and gusts reaching up to 44 mph. A live wildfire map from Watch Duty indicates multiple fires burning across the state, including vegetation fires and the Anderson Bridge fire in Cherry County, as well as the Road 203 fire affecting parts of Thomas and Blaine Counties.
The National Weather Service has issued a red flag warning for Kimball, Banner, Scotts Bluff, Cheyenne, and parts of Sioux and Morrill Counties until 6 PM local time on Saturday. The agency cautioned that any new fires ignited during this period could spread quickly due to dry and windy conditions. In a Friday morning update, the NWS forecast office in Hastings indicated that conditions on Saturday could reach "near-critical" levels for wildfire activity, with colder and windier weather expected on Sunday, along with a chance of light snow.
