New Delhi: On Friday, a parliamentary committee recommended that the Ministry of Environment encourage all states and Union territories to implement drone surveys in forest regions to prevent encroachment.
In a report presented to the Rajya Sabha, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Science and Technology, Environment, Forests, and Climate Change emphasized the need for transparency by making the findings of these drone surveys publicly accessible.
This initiative aims to allow the public and relevant authorities to assess the condition of forest lands prior to any commercial transactions, including sales or purchases.
The committee highlighted several cases of illegal sales of forest land, often involving unauthorized conversions and collusion among private entities, developers, and officials.
According to the committee, reports indicate that approximately 13,000 square kilometers of forest land have been unlawfully occupied across 25 states.
The committee referenced Rule 16(1) of the Van (Sanrakshan Evam Samvardhan) Rules, 2023, which mandates that all states and Union territories maintain comprehensive records of all types of forest land governed by the Van (Sanrakshan Evam Samvardhan) Act, 1980.
However, the committee expressed concerns regarding the accessibility of this information to the general public.
