The Indian Women's Hockey team has successfully reached the finals of the FIH Hockey World Cup Qualifiers 2026 after defeating Italy 1-0 in the semi-final held at the G M C Balayogi Hockey Ground (Gachibowli Hockey Complex) on Friday. Manisha Chauhan scored the decisive goal in the 40th minute, setting up a final clash against England on Saturday.
First Half: A Battle for Control
The initial quarter was marked by a fierce struggle for possession in midfield. India began the match with strong offensive plays, making several entries into Italy's circle. However, Italy responded with aggressive attacks, creating notable scoring opportunities.
In the second quarter, India regained momentum, utilizing their flanks to advance the ball and mount collective attacks, resulting in critical circle entries.
India earned their first penalty corner in the 18th minute, but Navneet Kaur's attempt was expertly saved by Italian goalkeeper Lucia Ines Caruso.
Another penalty corner was awarded in the 27th minute, where a variation play saw Captain Salima Tete's shot blocked on the line by an Italian defender, preventing a goal.
In the 29th minute, India had another chance through a penalty corner, but Navneet Kaur's shot went wide.
Chauhan's Goal Breaks the Stalemate
At the start of the second half, Italy launched a strong offensive, with Emilia Munitis approaching the goal, but India's goalkeeper Bichu Devi Kharibam made a vital save.
In the 40th minute, India was awarded another penalty corner, which they converted successfully. Manisha Chauhan executed a powerful dragflick that penetrated the Italian defense and found the back of the net.
Strong Defense Secures the Win
In the final quarter, India earned two early penalty corners as they sought to extend their lead, but Italy's defense held firm.
Italy fought hard in the closing minutes and earned a crucial penalty corner in the 59th minute, but India successfully defended against the equalizer, securing their victory.
India will face England in the final on March 14 at 7:30 PM IST.
