A missile hit a helipad within the US Embassy in Baghdad, with footage showing smoke rising from the area. This embassy, one of the largest US diplomatic missions globally, has faced numerous rocket and drone attacks from Iran-aligned groups in the past.
According to reports from security officials, the missile landed inside the embassy's premises after being fired from the Green Zone, a heavily fortified area in central Baghdad that accommodates Iraqi government buildings and foreign embassies. The officials, who requested anonymity due to their non-authorization to speak publicly, confirmed the incident.
On Friday, the embassy issued a Level 4 security alert for Iraq, cautioning that Iran and its affiliated militia groups have a history of targeting US citizens and interests, and may continue to do so. A recent drone strike in northern Iraq resulted in the death of a French soldier and injuries to others part of an international coalition.
Earlier this month, the US State Department advised non-emergency personnel and their families to leave Iraq due to escalating security threats.
US Military Actions Against Iran US Bombing Campaign Targets Iran's Kharg Island
In light of rising tensions in the region, US President Donald Trump announced via social media that the US has conducted significant bombing operations against military targets on Iran's Kharg Island, warning that the oil infrastructure there could be next. Kharg Island, located about 21 miles off Iran's southern coast, is crucial for the country's crude oil exports.
Trump stated, “Moments ago, at my direction, the United States Central Command executed one of the most powerful bombing raids in the History of the Middle East, and totally obliterated every MILITARY target in Iran’s crown jewel, Kharg Island.” He further noted that he refrained from targeting the oil infrastructure for now but warned that any interference with the free passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz would prompt a reassessment of this decision.
In response, Iran threatened that if its oil infrastructure were attacked, all oil fields and related facilities in the region would become targets. A spokesperson for the Central Headquarters of Khatam al-Anbiya stated that any assault on Iran’s oil infrastructure would lead to the destruction of energy assets belonging to companies with American ties, turning them into “a pile of ashes,” as reported by various media outlets.
