A Matalan store closure has left locals disappointed, as it has shut its doors for the last time. Residents of the area have learned that it will be replaced by something completely different. Matalan has closed its store in Heeley Retail Park in Sheffield, with the final day of business falling on March 7. The company has not revealed if staff have been made redundant as a result. A Matalan spokesperson said: "Our store in Heeley Retail Park will close in March.

"Our priority now is to support our colleagues. We are working closely with all those affected and, where possible, exploring alternative positions. We have thoroughly enjoyed serving customers at the retail park and hope they will continue to shop with us at our nearby Sheffield Parkway store."

Matalan operates over 200 stores across the UK and has been in business for around 40 years. The chain is known for affordable fashion, and sells women's, men's and kids' clothes.

Locals have expressed their disappointment over the closure of the Sheffield store."I went last week, it's so sad there's hardly anything there now," one person shared in a Facebook group.

The closest Matalan store for those in the area is now the one in Parkway Central retail park.

A spokesperson for Heeley Retail Park confirmed that the former Matalan site is set to be replaced by a padel club, which will open in the summer. Padel is a fast-paced sport that incorporates elements of tennis and squash.

It is played in pairs in an enclosed space, making the former Matalan site a good place to open up a centre dedicated to the popular sport.

It is not the only Matalan store to have closed this past weekend. The chain also shut down its Colne and Carlisle stores on March 7. Since then, it has also been announced that its store in Kendal would close on April 7.

A Matalan Spokesperson said: "Our store at South Lakeland Retail Park will close in April. Our priority now is to support our colleagues. We are working closely with all those affected and, where possible, exploring alternative positions.

"We have thoroughly enjoyed serving customers at the retail park and hope they will continue to shop with us at our nearby Lancaster store."

Despite these closures, Matalan is planning a refurbishment of 40 of its UK stores in 2026.
