Toilets will stay clean and bacteria-free if you ditch bleach for a more 'effective' item

Toilets are one of the most unpleasant things to clean in a home, as no one likes having to handle harsh chemical products such as bleach, but there are safer ways to get rid of germs. Bleach is the most common way to disinfect a toilet because it is a very strong cleaner that will destroy bacteria and viruses clinging to the porcelain surfaces.

It will completely clean a toilet but bleach can burn the skin and release chlorine fumes that are harmful to the lungs, so it must be handled very carefully each time it is used. There are many natural alternatives suggested online to clean a toilet, like vinegar or citric acid, but these cleaners are only useful at getting rid of stains like limescale, but will not completely remove germs. Instead, Ahmed Mezil, an expert from Hella Maid, has suggested a simple solution as Hydrogen peroxide has a safer way to break down germs and bacteria.

He said: "Maintaining a sparkling clean toilet is essential for a hygienic and pleasant bathroom environment. Hydrogen peroxide, a versatile and eco-friendly cleaning product, offers effective solutions for tackling tough stains and germs."

Hydrogen peroxide is antiseptic and one of the most environmentally responsible methods for disinfecting a toilet without relying on bleach.

It is a clear liquid that breaks down safely into water and oxygen, and will kill any bacteria it comes into contact with.

Unlike bleach, it is non-toxic, which means it will not leave any harmful residue or fumes when you use it.

Bleach is known to mask bad smells rather than remove them, but hydrogen peroxide is also a deodoriser that helps a bathroom smell much fresher.

How to remove germs from a toilet without using bleach

To begin, you will need to buy three percent hydrogen peroxide, which can be found in the cleaning aisle of most supermarkets.

There are stronger hydrogen peroxide products out there, but they are very potent and should only be used by professionals. Three percent is the best for everyday cleaning.

All you need to do is pour it into a toilet bowl and let it sit for 20 minutes. After the time is up, flush the toilet, give it a wipe with a toilet brush and any stains should be completely gone.

You can also fill a spray bottle with hydrogen peroxide and use it on toilet surfaces like handles, seats and the rim.

Use it to clean your toilet once a week and it will make cleaning the toilet so much easier while preventing germs from building up in your bathroom.
