Chats on Instagram will no longer be private.
Instagram End-to-End Encryption Ending: If you chat on Instagram, then there is a big update for you. After May this year, chatting on Instagram will not be as secure as it is now. This is because the company has decided to remove end-to-end encryption from this platform. Meta said that it will not provide end-to-end encryption protection for messages after May 8, 2026. The company has started informing users about this by sending a notice in the app.
What will be its effect?
The end of end-to-end encryption means that your messages on Instagram will no longer be private. Meta will be able to access them. This means that if you chat with someone on Instagram, Meta can read the chat, not just you and the other user. Instagram began offering end-to-end encryption protection for messages in December 2023, and now, less than three years later, it is being discontinued.
What options does the user have now?
Meta has stated that if any users believe this change will impact their chatting, new instructions will be coming soon. These will explain how users can download their chat data. The company will also provide the option to download media along with chatting.
Why is this change being made?
Meta has not yet officially stated the reasons for this change, but it is believed that this feature is being discontinued due to growing concerns about child sexual abuse material (CSAM) on the internet. Disabling end-to-end encryption will allow Instagram to scan messages and calls and detect CSAM and other objectionable content. It is worth noting that governments in many countries, including the European Union, are pressuring social media platforms to detect and delete CSAM and other objectionable content.
