Kolkata: News of horrific violence has come to light before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s mega rally in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal. There was a fierce clash between BJP workers and supporters of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) going towards the rally venue. Within no time the dispute escalated so much that bricks and stones started being thrown on the road, due to which huge tension spread in the area. Heavy police force has been deployed to control the situation.
Rally bus targeted, policemen also injured
According to eyewitnesses, the violence broke out when TMC workers allegedly targeted a bus loaded with BJP supporters, which was heading towards the rally venue. After this attack, there was a direct conflict between the two groups. It is being told that many workers have been seriously injured in this violent clash. The police team that arrived for rescue also had to face the anger of the protesters, in which many policemen got injured.
Stone pelting and chaos: Both parties blamed each other
The round of allegations and counter-allegations has started since the incident. BJP workers present at the spot say, “We were peacefully moving towards the venue raising slogans, when without any provocation, stones were thrown at us and vehicles were vandalized.”
At the same time, local leaders of Trinamool Congress have rejected these allegations outright. TMC claims that BJP supporters raised inflammatory slogans during the procession and threw stones at the houses of local people, leading to the conflict in self-defence.
Security agencies on high alert before PM Modi’s arrival
This violence, which happened just before Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Kolkata, has alerted the security agencies. The police have currently cordoned off the entire area and dispersed the crowd using tear gas shells. Rapid Action Force (RAF) has been deployed at the rally site and surrounding sensitive areas. The administration has appealed to the people to maintain peace, but the atmosphere still remains tense.
