The singer's unique swan dress set tongues wagging when she debuted it at the Academy Awards in 2001.

The 98th Academy Awards are taking place on Sunday at the prestigious Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, and stars attending are set to put their best foot forward for the glittering event. This year's spectacle is being hosted by US comedian Conan O'Brien. Films such as One Battle After Another, Sinners and Hamnet are leading the way for the nominations - and fans don't have long to wait to find out the winners. As well as looking forward to the winners being announced, viewers are always keen to see what celebrities are wearing on the red carpet. Ahead of the annual event, we've taken a look back at the biggest fashion faux pas from over the decades, including a dress made out of gold American Express credit cards...

Whoopi Goldberg donned this daring number back in 1993, which was a green, purple and blue trouser suit, gown and cape rolled into one. Perhaps it would have worked with a different colour scheme as that lime green is especially distracting.

Izzy Gardiner really pushed the boat out at the 67th Annual Academy Awards when she rocked up on the red carpet wearing a dress made of gold Amex cards paired with a golden sash. The designer slightly resembled an Oscar with the golden gown, which was made from 254 American Express gold cards linked together. It's original but looks painful.

Edy Williams left little to the imagination at the ceremony back in 1986 with her risque beaded dress, which somewhat resembles Kim Kardashian's 2023 Met Gala gown, which also turned heads. Edy's dress is still considered one of the most controversial dresses to appear on the Oscars red carpet.

Sarah Paulson's fuchsia cut-out dress, which she wore at the event in 2019, was branded a flop overall, as it swallowed up the actress. The colour suits Sarah, but the outfit is wearing her.

This dress stands out the most in my memory as one of the most unique of the Oscars' outfits. Icelandic icon Björk is known for her quirky style, and her swan dress is unforgettable for all the wrong reasons. I think the gown would have worked if the swan's head hadn't been hanging lifelessly around the singer's neck. It's a little morbid!

Demi Moore has had many red carpet successes - but her outfit at the 61st Academy Awards was a huge miss. It's a combination of burselque, corporate attire and Tudor queen. Sadly, too much is happening at once, and it has to make our list.

Oscar-winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow certainly missed the mark when she wore this Alexander McQueen number to the Academy Awards in 2002. The Shakespeare in Love star said in a Q&A on her GOOP website: "There were a few issues; I still love the dress itself, but I should have worn a bra, and I should have just had simple beachy hair and less makeup. Then, it would have worked as I wanted it to - a little bit of punk at the Oscars."
