Presenter Adam Henson shared some heartbreaking news on BBC's Countryfile on Sunday evening. Lambing season had begun on the farm and what was supposed to be a joyous moment quickly turned to tragedy.

Prepared with his bottle of lubrication and long green plastic gloves, the TV host got heavily involved in welcoming some new additions into the world. One poor sheep had been struggling to give birth so he assisted her by having a feel around. With a concerned look on his face, he told the camera: "So, this doesn't look very good at all." Adam went on to explain: "The birth fluid is black, dark, which indicates a dead lamb. And that's why she has been struggling." The presenter then continued to dig around inside the lamb who was bleeting and bleeding, before delivering some better news.

"This third lamb is actually alive," he declared as he delivered it safely before shaking it to "clear its lungs".

Adam then explained: "One of the difficulties when you have triplets is that there's so many lambs inside the womb, if you get a third lamb, it can have its umbilical cord kicked off or broken by one of the other lambs.

"And if it's umbilical breaks while it is inside its mum, it then gasps for air and drowns in its own fluid."

While two of the three lambs were alive and well, Adam reflected on the "realities of farming" with a forlorn look on his face.

"Although I've been doing it for as long as I can remember, it still gets me," he choked. "I don't like having dead lambs, it's horrible.

"But to have two healthy ones that are born alive and the ewe will now rear is a good thing. So, every cloud has a silver lining."

The ewes and their newborns were moved to clean pens as Adam explained that the first 48 hours of a lamb's life are "critical to survival".

Despite the farm's efforts, the farmer explained that they still "lose a few" each year.
