Meta’s decision to turn off End-to-End Encryption feature on Instagram
American technology company Meta has informed its users about an important decision. The End-to-End Encrypted (E2EE) direct message feature available on Instagram will no longer be available after May 8, 2026. The feature was a strong privacy safeguard on the social media platform, and its shutdown may cause concern among many users. Let us understand this feature in depth.
Meaning of End-to-End Encryption
End-to-End Encryption (E2EE) is a technology that secures your conversation in such a way that it can only be read by the people who are involved in the conversation. This means that neither hackers nor any third party, not even Meta, can view these chats. It can be understood as if your conversation is taking place in a closed room, the key of which is kept only by you and the other person.
This system is based on special types of cryptographic keys, which are given to each device separately. When you send a message, it is immediately converted into a code that is impossible for anyone else to read. The message appears in normal form only when it reaches the recipient’s device. Similarly, this rule applies to audio and video calls also.
Why is Instagram removing E2EE feature?
Meta has clarified that the biggest reason behind this decision is the low interest among users towards this feature. The company says that very few people were using encrypted chats. Meta spokeswoman Dina El-Kassabi said the feature was not used as intended. Their plan now is to focus on features that more people like and that provide more value to a wider range of users.
Along with this, there has been a discussion about encryption for a long time. Many law enforcement agencies and child safety organizations say that completely private systems make it difficult to identify wrongful activities online.
Therefore, Meta has officially informed that encrypted chats will be discontinued after May 8, 2026. Users who have used it now will receive notifications in advance so they can download their chats, photos, and other media, as they will no longer be accessible.
