Snow could hammer large parts of the UK later this month in an unwelcome return to bitterly cold weather for millions of Britons. That is according to new weather maps from WXCHARTS, useing MetDesk data, which show a period of unsettled weather could arrive in less than two weeks' time.

On March 28, the maps show snow hitting much of Scotland's east coast and parts of North West England, affecting a total of seven cities. Much of western and central Scotland could see between 3cm and 5cm of snow, with northern England also receiving a dusting. Temperatures are also expected to plummet, according to maps from Netweather, which has forecast brutal lows of -6C for parts of the Scottish Highlands just hours later at 6am on March 29. Parts of northern england and Wales could also struggle to get above freezing as a an Arctic freeze sweeps much of the nation.

Most of England will be significantly milder, getting up to 6C in the South. However, parts of the North West could remain chilly at -1C.

Separately, the Met Office long-range forecast for March 21-30 reads: "Under the influence of high pressure, it will be a settled start to this period, with most places predominantly dry.

"Temperatures will be close to or a little above average, although for parts of the south it will feel cooler than earlier in the week with a brisk easterly wind starting to develop.

"Overall though is spells of spring sunshine it should feel quite pleasant. How long the settled conditions last is less certain, with some signals that showers/rain could return later in the period, most likely to the south."
