Holidaymakers on board a flight from Tenerife to Poland were left stunned when an unruly passenger opened the door and disappeared down the emergency slide. The man, a 27-year-old Spaniard, had been unruly during the journey from Tenerife's south airport to Warsaw's Chopin International Airport.

He had reportedly shown aggressive behaviour, refused to follow flight instructions or sit down and assaulted a member of the aircrew on several occasions. Police were waiting at Warsaw when the flight arrived from the Canary Islands, but were stunned to see the plane's door open whilst the aircraft was still taxiing on the runway.

The escape slide was suddenly activated, and the passenger emerged. Once he hit the ground, he got up and ran off along the runway.

A statement from the Border Guard said: "The agents, who had been alerted and were waiting on the platform, observed that the door of the plane opened suddenly and that the evacuation ramp unfolded."

Border Guard Major Dagmara Bielec, spokeswoman for the airport command, told the Polish news agency PAP that "as soon as he reached the ground, the passenger began to flee and was immediately arrested."

The Border Guard spokeswoman explained that the captain and crew of the aircraft called for help when, shortly before landing, the passenger refused to follow instructions, refused to sit down and hit a plane worker repeatedly.

Shortly after, according to the same testimony, the subject violently pushed the crew members aside.

Due to his very aggressive behaviour, police had to restrain him using restraint techniques and handcuffs.

Medical tests confirmed that the detainee was sober, although it was necessary to administer sedatives due to his state of nervousness.

He is currently in custody in a detention centre for foreigners, where he will remain for up to three months until his surrender to Spanish authorities is completed and he faces trial for endangering air safety.
