One contestant on University Challenge immediately sparked a debate between fans as the latest episode kicked off on Monday night. Presenter Amol Rajan welcomed two teams who were both playing their second of a possible three quarter finals. As both teams had lost their first game, the stakes were high as it meant this was an elimination match.
It was between Darwin College, Cambridge and Warwick. Amol explained that the team who loses this game would leave the competition, while the team that comes out on top will take part in one more quarter final and would have to win it to avoid the same fate.
The team of four from Darwin, Cambridge, were the first to introduce themselves, starting with Lewis Strachan. But it was the second player who caught fans' attention with her lengthy surname.
Revealing that she was from Ireland, the player introduced herself as Ní Mhuircheartaigh.
Fans were quick to comment as one posted: "Blimey! What a name that is."
Another asked: "I'm really sorry but....How are we pronouncing that again?"
A third shared: "How cool is that name."
Spotting the debate, another fan chimed in: "It's pronounced knee Murra Hurty in case anyone is wondering."
Another joked: "Irish name pronunciations are a pet piamh of mine."
Also entering the discussion, someone else added: "Her least favourite words must be 'How do you spell that again?'."
Darwin ended up soaring ahead with 165 points compared to Warwick's 110 ahead of their three bonus questions later in the game. Darwin's three questions were on Eastern and Southern Africa. Despite answering two incorrectly, their score gave them a comfortable lead.
The three bonuses then went to Warwick, who were tasked with answering questions on the name of different titles in Christian churches.
However, before they could answer the third bonus, the gong went off. With a final score of 175, Darwin were announced as the winners.
Offering his commiserations to Warwick, who ended on 125, Amol said: "Warwick, it's so brutal having to say goodbye to a team that's done so well over so many matches, but you've played absolutely brilliantly in this competition and you've lost to a wonderful team that's played really well. You did so well."
