It is mandatory to always be punctual at work. Being late not only creates a bad impression but can also affect the environment of the workplace. Meetings can be delayed, colleagues sometimes have to take on extra responsibilities and productivity can also suffer. Being on time is seen as a professional quality in most corporate set-ups and hence repeated tardiness can cause concerns about conduct, which can even be the cause of layoffs. However, a concession should be given when the reason is genuine or if an employee is rarely late.

But something rather surprising happened with a professional who left many social media users stunned. In a Reddit post, a person recounted the story of his co-worker who maintained strict punctuality every day for more than 7 years. Despite that, he was fired by the company for being 20 minutes late, that too for the first time.

Colleagues stage protest after punctual employee fired

As per the Redditor, the incident happened on a random Tuesday and he and his other colleagues found out about it a few days later. As supportive co-workers, all of them devised a clever plan that they would execute the next week. As per the Reddit user, he and his team decided to be deliberately late for as long as it took the company to rehire their colleague.

Redditors queued up in the comments section, sharing their two cents on the matter. Many of them agreed that the organisation might have been looking for a reason to fire him for a long time, but couldn’t get one. As a result, they took the opportunity of his being late, even for the first time, as a means to lay him off. Someone else pointed out that a person associated with any of the authorities of the company might have been eyeing the employee’s position and hence he was fired.

Worker’s sudden firing sparks online debate

Not long ago, another Reddit user shared a similar story on the platform. According to him, he had dedicated over 9 years to the company, overseeing all the meetings and ensuring that projects were delivered on time. He was the only person to willingly extend his work hours to resolve unexpected problems whenever they arose, stepping in to calm conflicts and maintain harmony.

He even upgraded his professional skills and obtained new certifications to remain valuable to the organisation. Despite that, his employment came to an abrupt end, that too over a phone call and without prior warning. He was informed that his position was being eliminated due to organisational restructuring. The sudden dismissal left him stunned and distressed, highlighting how fragile job security is in today’s world.
