I tried mini eggs from Aldi, Asda, M&S and Lidl - one was better and cheaper than Cadbury

Mini eggs are my one true obsession. I'm actually really glad they don't sell them all year round, or I'd spend an unholy amount of money on feeding my addiction, but at Easter they're the perfect chocolatey treat.

The smell, the crunch, the cute pastel colours - they're without a doubt one of the best Easter sweets out there. But being a big-name brand, they aren't always cheap and it's sometimes hard to get your hands on them at this time of year. So I decided to test out a few supermarket-own varieties to see if any could measure up to the real deal.

Most major supermarkets offer their own off-brand version of the classic Easter treat and they are all cheaper than the real thing. I decided to pick up different bags from Aldi, Lidl, M&S and Asda and I couldn't wait to get stuck in as I'd never tried any of them before.

I also bought a bag of Cadbury's Mini Eggs - for comparison purposes of course. I tried to get similarly-sized packs from each shop and I think I succeeded - except in Aldi where they only had larger packets of the treat. Not that I was complaining.

I'm happy to report that one bag really outshone the rest, even the real thing, and it's safe to say I will be buying as many bags as possible before Easter arrives.

Mini Eggs

I just had to start with the real thing. Obviously, I know how they taste but a refresher can't hurt.

Honestly, it's no wonder these are so popular. As soon as I cracked open the pack, that gorgeous sugary scent filled my nostrils and I couldn't wait to dive in. They're crunchy, but not too hard, and the creamy chocolate inside is just the best.

Unsurprisingly, Cadbury Mini Eggs become increasingly harder to find the closer that you get to Easter. The 80g bags are currently out of stock at Asda and Tesco, but they're around £2 usually, which works out at around £2.50 per 100g.

Asda

Moving on to Asda, and the 80g bag of milk chocolate mini eggs cost me just £1.12 - or £1.40 per 100g, which is significantly cheaper than Cadbury.

However, they definitely tasted cheaper too. They didn't have that same sweet aroma, and while the chocolate was still kind of creamy, it was nowhere near as good as the real thing.

They weren't the worst that I tried, but sadly they weren't the best either. They sit firmly in the middle of my ranking, and for that reason, I'm giving them a score of 2.5/5.

I feel like these should come with a warning - be very careful when you bite into these, or you may end up breaking a tooth. This is almost what happened to me, as it took several attempts for my poor teeth to crack through the impenetrable outer shell to get to the chocolate inside, and I'm not sure it was worth it.

The Mister Choc eggs, priced at £1.15 for 80g, were the second-cheapest out of the bunch. After I got over the initial shock of the texture, the taste was actually kind of nice, but nothing compared to the real thing. I'm scoring them one out of five.

Aldi

Aldi and Lidl tend to stock very similar products, so you best believe I was braced for impact when I bit into one of these eggs. Thankfully, they were nowhere near as hard, but they didn't taste much better.

The Choceur Mini Eggs were the biggest bag that I bought, as there didn't seem to be any smaller ones around. They cost £3.39 for 256g, or £1.32 per 100g. They were also decidedly mid-tier. The chocolate was a tad on the bland side, which I guess is better than it tasting bad, but it still isn't great.

If you're after a rich and creamy-tasting mini egg then I'd probably avoid these. I gave them a score of two out of five.

Marks and Spencer

Over the past few weeks I've been seeing nothing but M&S speckled egg cookies and chocolate bars all over my social media feed. I'm yet to try either of these, and I had actually never tried the eggs themselves either, until last week.

My first impression was that these are enormous. There's nothing mini about them. They're round and shiny like pebbles, and the chocolate to shell ratio is just perfect.

The filling truly blew me away as well. It instantly melts in your mouth, and they're so moreish too - maybe even more so than the real Cadbury Mini Eggs. Even better, they're cheaper too, with a 90g bag costing £1.79, or £1.94 per 100g.

This is the brand to go for if you're looking for a decent Cadbury's alternative. I'm now even more desperate to try the cookies, chocolate bar, or anything else with speckled eggs that the retailer decides to think up. They earn a perfect score of five stars from me.
