Fire broke out on the roof of Old Parliament House, fire team reached the spot and brought the fire under control.

New Delhi: A sudden fire broke out on the roof of the old Parliament House i.e. Constitution House on Tuesday evening. The incident is said to have happened around 5:40 pm. The fire caused panic for some time, however the fire was soon brought under control.

According to the information, repair work was going on on the roof. During this time welding was being done. A fire broke out on the roof due to sparks released during welding. The fire was initially limited to a small area, but soon it started spreading.

CISF fire team immediately extinguished the fire

CISF fire team immediately reached the spot and completely controlled the fire within a few minutes. Officials said that the fire did not spread to any large extent nor was there any loss of life or property. At present investigation is going on as to what was the reason for the fire.

Constituent Assembly remained the center of democracy for 96 years

The old Parliament House is now known as ‘Samvidhan Sadan’. This building was the heartbeat of Indian democracy for almost 96 years. The Indian Constitution was created and enacted in this building built in 1927. After the inauguration of the new Parliament House in September 2023, its name was changed to Constitution House.

Now this historical building will be used for parliamentary programs and as a museum. Designed by British architects Sir Edwin Lutyens and Sir Herbert Baker, the building was begun in 1921 and completed in 1927.

CISF is handling security

After the 2023 Parliament security lapse, a major change was made in the security arrangements. From May 2024, the responsibility of security of both the old and new Parliament buildings has been handed over to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). Earlier this responsibility was with the special team of CRPF. At present the security of both the buildings is the responsibility of CISF. After this fire incident, instructions have been given to take precautions in safety and repair work.
