Reasons for increase in sugar: Blood sugar often increases due to poor eating habits. Especially due to sweet snacks or high carbohydrate foods. But fluctuations in blood glucose are not always caused by food. Due to these few habits the sugar level also starts increasing. General Physician, Dr. Aamir Khan, in an Instagram video, has told that apart from diet, what are the reasons for increasing blood sugar?
Blood sugar level may increase due to these reasons:
Stress: Increases the secretion of a hormone called cortisol from the adrenal glands in the body, which is also called stress hormone. It can cause a sudden increase in blood sugar levels by increasing glucose uptake. High cortisol interferes with the function of insulin, which can lead to uncontrolled blood sugar levels.
Poor sleep: Not sleeping well at night can also increase insulin resistance. This means that glucose remains in the blood for a longer time, which increases the blood sugar level. Chronic lack of sleep can significantly increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, even in people who generally try to eat a healthy diet.
Exercise: During exercise, muscles need immediate energy, for which the body releases more glucose into the blood. During high intensity or resistance training, glucose production may exceed glucose consumption, causing a temporary increase in blood sugar.
Infection or illness: When the body is fighting an infection, it releases more glucose into the blood to fuel the immune system. This is why people with diabetes often find their blood sugar levels elevated when they become ill. However, he emphasizes that this reaction is completely normal, as the body is working to fight the disease.
Hormones: Hormonal fluctuations in the menstrual cycle, especially increased progesterone in the luteal phase, can increase blood sugar levels by increasing insulin resistance. This lasts for 10-14 days. Decreased estrogen during menopause also makes blood sugar control challenging.
