Delhi: Salman Ali Aga’s run out was much talked about in the second ODI match between Pakistan and Bangladesh played in Dhaka. After this incident, a debate broke out regarding sportsmanship and rules. Now the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), the organization that oversees the rules of cricket, has clarified its position on this entire matter and has declared the umpire’s decision as correct as per the rules.

what was the incident

In the 39th over of the match, Pakistan’s wicketkeeper batsman Mohammad Rizwan played a shot. While trying to stop the ball, Bangladesh bowler Mehdi Hasan Miraj and Salman Aga standing at the non-striker end collided with each other. At that time Aga was out of his crease. He felt that the ball was now out of play, so he bent down to pick it up. Meanwhile, Miraj immediately picked up the ball and hit it on the stumps. The matter went to the third umpire, where after watching the replays, Agha was declared run out.

MCC said the decision was correct based on the rules

After this incident many people raised questions on the umpire’s decision. However, the MCC clearly stated that in the circumstances available, the umpire had no option of giving the batsman not out, when the bells were dropped, Salman Ali Aga was out of the crease and the ball was still in play. In such a situation, according to the rules, it is clearly a run out.

Had he touched the ball he could have been in more trouble.

MCC also clarified that if Agha had touched the ball with his hand, the situation could have become more complicated. In that situation, he could have been given out under the rules of obstructing the field, hence from the point of view of the rules, the umpire’s decision was completely justified.

The ball is not considered dead due to collision

After the incident, some fans believed that the ball should have been declared dead due to the collision between the players. On this, MCC said that under the current rules, the ball is not automatically considered dead just because of a collision. According to the organization, if there was such a provision, players could have deliberately created situations like collision to take advantage of it. Also, no player was seriously injured in this incident, so it was natural for the game to continue.

Despite the new rule the result remains the same

MCC also informed that some revised rules are going to be implemented in cricket from October. Under these rules, the umpire will be able to decide whether the ball lying on the ground has completely stopped or not. However, the organization says that even if this new rule had been implemented during this match, the result in this incident would still have been run out. The reason is that when a fielder is actively trying to run out the batsman by holding the ball and the batsman is out of the crease, then it is difficult to consider the ball as completely stopped.

Questions were also raised on sportsmanship

After this run out, the discussion regarding sportsmanship also intensified. Salman Ali Aga had also said that if he had been in that situation, he would probably have shown sportsmanship. On this, the MCC admitted that if the Bangladesh team wanted, it could have withdrawn its appeal and called the batsman back, because the captain has such authority, but once the appeal is made, the umpire has to give the decision only on the basis of the rules.
