Now in this episode Uttar Pradesh The government has taken a big step regarding food safety. Now from April 1, it is mandatory to write expiry date on every egg sold in the state.
The purpose of this decision is to make people understand how fresh eggs they are buying and for how long it is safe to use them. Often people eat eggs stored for a long time without knowing, which harms health. In such a situation, the question has become even more important as to how old eggs are okay to eat and when they should be avoided.
What does expiry date mean?
- A date like ‘Best Before’ or ‘Sell BY’ is written on the egg cartons.
- Best Before: The taste and quality of eggs remains better till this date.
- Sell By: Eggs can be sold in the shop till this date.
- Even after these dates, eggs can be safe for some time, provided they are stored properly.
After how long do eggs expire?
If eggs are stored properly in the refrigerator, they can usually remain safe for 3 to 5 weeks. Even after the packing date (the day the eggs were packed), they can be used for some time, but gradually their quality starts reducing. After 5 weeks the taste, color and texture of the eggs may change. However, if there is no foul smell or defect in them, they can remain safe for some time.
What are the disadvantages of eating expired eggs?
Eating spoiled or expired eggs increases the risk of food poisoning. A bacteria called Salmonella can grow in it, which causes stomach problems. Its symptoms include stomach ache, vomiting, diarrhea, fever. This danger can be more serious for small children, elderly and people with weak immunity. Therefore such people should not eat expired or spoiled eggs.
How to identify whether an egg is bad or not?
It is not very difficult to identify whether an egg has expired or not. You can find out in some easy ways-
- If a strong smell comes from the egg when you break it, then understand that it has gone bad.
- If cracks, stickiness or mold are seen on the eggshell, do not use it.
- In fresh eggs the white is clear and the yolk is thick. If the color looks faded or strange, use caution.
- If there is even the slightest doubt about the egg, it is better to throw it away.
How to keep eggs fresh for a long time?
- Some easy tips can be adopted to maintain the freshness of eggs. The safest way to keep eggs is to keep them in the refrigerator at a temperature of 4–5°C.
- The temperature in the refrigerator door changes frequently, due to which eggs can spoil quickly. So don’t keep eggs on the side
- Always keep eggs separate from raw meat to reduce the risk of bacteria.
- Cook the egg until its yolk and white become completely hard.
- Eggs are definitely a long-lasting food, but eating expired or spoiled eggs can have adverse effects on health. With proper identification, proper storage and caution, you can avoid this risk.
