Good Morning Britain hosts Susanna Reid and Ed Balls introduced Lulu on Wednesday's edition of the ITV programme where the singer opened up about her mortality. The Shout hitmaker, 77, spoke candidly about her struggles with alcohol and overcoming her addiction with the support of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). The pop star, whose career has spanned decades since her first hits in the 1960s, opened up about her historical drinking problems in her memoir, If You Only Knew, which was released last year. She has since marked 12 years of sobriety and is returning to the Royal Albert Hall stage for a one-off performance.

The performer was asked about her recovery process as host Ed, 59, questioned whether she stilll attends AA meetings. But in a heartbreaking admission, Lulu, discussed her own life span.

"To be honest with you, I'm up to my meetings," she explained. "I'm finding I've got so much going on. I'm 77 but really I think I'm 15. I run like a mad woman but there's personal responsibilities."

She continued: "At my point in life there's mortality issues.

"You start thinking about your life span and how much longer it's going to last. There are just issues that you worry about."

Susanna then mentioned the Royal Family and addressed Princess Kate and King Charles's cancer diagnosis.

"It's interesting you say that, but the Princess of Wales recently said she's drunk alcohol less since her cancer diagnosis," the GMB host mused.

Lulu commented: "That's a whole other thing. That's a whole physical problem that she and our king are handling in such a dignified manner. The fact they're sharing their problems, problems people in life have, because you look like you're living on an elevated position in life but you don't get away with real life issues."

She added, "I'm going to have fun because I'm so lucky. I have had ups and downs but I've had the most incredible months of my life but I've also had downs. But I never talked about them."

Susanna then said Lulu has "defied ageing" and asked if it was down to giving up drinking alcohol.

"I think not drinking helps everything," Lulu explained. "It helps you get clarity and you're not carrying a burden of shame and not carrying the responsibility of not sharing. All of this stuff... writing this book was not easy."

Lulu urged others to not feel like they are alone or shame and to seek support.

Susanna asked the singer about her "shame" amid problems in her childhood and being a drinker.

Lulu said: "It's like you're a living a lie. But I just want to say to anybody out there living with an issue like alcohol, or suffering with anxiety this is what Lulu's Mental Health Trust will do.

We research and decide who we are going to give the money to. Last year, it was Young Minds."
