For centuries, humans have been searching for ways to increase their lifespan. Now scientists have made an interesting discovery in this direction, which is to the bowhead whale, a huge creature of the sea. Researchers believe that special whale proteins found in whales may help humans extend their lifespan and reduce the risk of diseases like cancer.
Why did whales become the center of research?
Whales are one of Earth’s longest-lived creatures. Bowhead whales in particular can live for over 200 years. Surprisingly, despite such a large body and long life, the incidence of cancer in whales is very low. This mystery is called Peto’s paradox in science.
Generally, organisms that have more cells in their bodies should have a higher risk of cancer, but whales challenge this rule.
What is the secret of ‘whale protein’?
Scientists found that proteins to DNA repair and cell protection in whales’ bodies work more effectively than those in humans. These proteins keep cells healthy for a long time, prevent mutations (genetic changes) and slow down the aging process. Initial studies in the lab indicate that if the function of these proteins can be adapted or mimicked in human cells, the body’s natural repair system could be further strengthened.
Is it really possible to live to 200 years old?
While the idea that humans could live up to 200 years is tempting, scientists say the reality is much more complex. Many factors affect aging, such as genetics, lifestyle, metabolism and environment.
Nevertheless, this research being done on whales is giving new directions in understanding the aging process. If scientists can successfully develop these protective mechanisms in whales, it could lead to future therapies that better repair DNA, slow cell decay and reduce age- diseases. At present, this research is in the initial stage, but it is definitely being considered a big step towards making human life longer and healthier.
