The wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan has been named as the SRH captain in the absence of Pat Cummins, who will be missing the first few games of the IPL 2026 season.

His promotion is powered by his sensational outing in the T20 World Cup 2026. The team confirmed that Pat Cummins will miss the first few games of the tournament due to a lower back injury.

The franchise confirmed the elevation of Ishan Kishan as stand-in captain ahead of the 2026 season. To be noted, Ishan Kishan joined the side last season, where he joined for INR 11.25 crores. He had a mixed campaign in the previous edition of the tournament, scoring 354 runs in 14 games at a strike rate of 152.58.

Meanwhile, Abhishek Sharma has been named as vice-captain. Ishan Kishan has amassed 317 runs at a strike rate of 193. He was instrumental in India’s title win during the marquee event.

His decision could stem from his recent captaincy success with Jharkhand in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where he led the side to the title last season.

This marks a significant turnaround for Kishan, who had fallen out of favour with the Indian national team towards the end of the 2022 season and was subsequently dropped from the central contract after opting out of domestic cricket for a period.

He also led Jharkhand to their maiden Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title in 2025, scoring 517 runs in only 10 matches at a strike rate of 197.

In the finals, Ishan Kishan led the side from the front, smashing a hundred in 49 deliveries, powering a 69-run victory and underlining his value beyond his role behind the stumps.

After his impressive domestic stint, he was brought back to India’s setup and was named in India’s playing 11 for the T20 World Cup.

Ishan Kishan hit two back-to-back fifties against Namibia and Pakistan. His crucial knock against New Zealand in the finals, guiding India to the biggest total in the history of the tournament’s final.
